As an American and as a former academic who found the political correctness of what has been called "the regressive left" incredibly stifling of free expression--still I cannot hail the election of Donald Trump as a win for America and American values. I hope to be proven wrong. Trump's election was not so much a vibrant, thoughtful call for free speech in the spirit of Douglas Murray, as it was a rather angry rant full of the conspiracy filled vitriol of the alternative right. Perhaps this is some necessary corrective to the inability for us to speak difficult truths--and as such I will wait for a final assessment, but until then I am disconcerted and cautious...
