Israel Not Alone

Reader comment on: The Academic War on Israel

Submitted by Ron McCracken, Apr 24, 2015 23:37

Debate and discussion have fallen victims to 'tolerance' in many arenas recently. Universities renowned for excellence in debate have suddenly become mortuaries for free speech.

Only speakers whose views match of event planners are welcome. Israel is far from alone in its 'unsuitability' for open, honest, informed debate whether on campuses or in public venues famed for such debates and presentations in the past.

Homosexuality, climate change and abortion are other subjects which can only be addressed by individuals who endorse the practices or premises of event organizers. Universities that have been bastions of free speech are now reduced to limp locations for speakers whose views are 'politically correct' and advocate the views of those who invited them. Only those who 'tolerate' the behaviours or beliefs in question are welcome. Others will be un-invited, shouted down, or physically attacked.

This is far from 'higher education' or open debate. It is indoctrination. It is mandatory compliance. It is rampant. It is embarrassing. It is the antithesis of academic freedom. It is utterly shameful.
