Conflating al Qaeda with the Southern Movement is government propaganda

Reader comment on: Focus on Yemen, Not Israel-Palestine

Submitted by Jane Novak (United States), Sep 3, 2010 09:13

Al Qaeda's position advocates the unity of the Ummah, and numerous al Qaeda operatives from al Libi down to al Zaid have said they do not support the separation of Yemen into two states. Once one of them said they would support the southerners quest to regain their independence if they established strict Sharia law, but that was just a favor to Yemen's president. Al Qaeda (and bin Laden) supported the forces of President Ali Abdullah Saleh during the 1994 civil war which was framed as a jihad against the godless communists (South Yemen was Marxist). Its a term Saleh still uses today.
