Establishments and the media, doomed together
Reader comment on: Donald Trump Boosts Europe's Anti-Establishment Movement

What should be disconcerting is that almost all commentators write of establishments and the media as if they are Siamese twins which, on the evidence, they are though they shouldn't be. It's taken for granted that the giants of the US media led by the NYT are liberal with a natural bias in favour of the Democratic party. Bewildered US pundits are writing mea culpas that they failed to see the Trump revolution forming. They don't seem to make a connection between that professional failure and their own unidimensional worldview -- or, at least, they're not writing it yet.
Brexit and the Scottish referendum which almost broke up the UK were other examples of media blindness to politician's blindness.
The interaction between political and bureaucratic elites and the media has become almost wholly circular because it involves people who all believe the same thing agreeing with each other. The French establishment are panicking that Le Pen could win the presidency because they've realised that whoever the mainstream parties of either Left or Right nominate will be a former holder of high political office who is a proven failure.
Across Europe and the US, it's like watching an avalanche slowly gather speed behind Tweedledum and Tweedledee unsuspectingly playing some inconsequential game in it's path. Except that now they are beginning to suspect but don't how to save themselves. The media will be swept away too for their complicity.
